Stump Grinding in Lake & Porter County
Get rid of the stump you keep mowing around. Ground below grade so you can re-sod, replant or build over the spot.
Grinding vs. full removal
Most stumps are ground, not pulled. A stump grinder chews the stump down below the soil line, leaving a hole full of wood chips. Pulling the whole root ball is rarely worth it unless you’re building right on that spot.
How deep is deep enough
For lawn, a few inches below grade is usually enough. If you want to replant a tree in the same area or pour concrete over it, ask for deeper grinding and for surface roots to be chased out. Say what you plan to do with the spot before you get the quote.
What happens to the grindings
Some services leave the chips to backfill the hole; others haul them and bring topsoil. Either is fine; just know which you’re paying for.
Call 811 first
Grinding goes into the ground, and gas, electric and cable lines often run right through front yards. Contact Indiana 811 to have lines marked before work starts. A good stump grinding service will ask about this.
Old stumps from ash trees
Many NWI yards still have stumps left behind from the wave of emerald ash borer removals. Pricing is usually by stump diameter and access, and many services discount multiple stumps on one visit.
