Tree Questions, Answered

Straight answers for homeowners across Lake and Porter County.

Are you a tree service?

No. Tree NWI is a free referral service. When you call, we connect you with an independent local tree service that serves your area. That company gives the estimate and does the work.

Does it cost anything to use this service?

No. It’s free for homeowners and there’s no obligation to hire anyone.

How much does tree removal cost?

It depends on the tree’s size, how close it is to buildings and lines, access for equipment, and whether the stump and wood are included. A local tree service will quote it after seeing the tree.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree on my property?

Usually not for a tree fully on private property, but rules vary by town, and trees in the parkway strip between the sidewalk and street are often the town’s. Check with your town hall if you’re unsure.

Is my ash tree worth saving?

Purdue Extension says ash trees with more than about 30% canopy loss generally shouldn’t be treated, and dead ash should be removed promptly because it becomes brittle. A tree pro can look at the canopy and advise.

A tree is touching a power line. Who do I call?

Stay away from it. Call 911 if there’s immediate danger and report it to NIPSCO. Line clearance is the utility’s job.

Does Indiana license tree services or arborists?

No. Indiana has no license requirement for tree work. Ask any company for proof of insurance, and ask whether they have an ISA Certified Arborist if that matters to you.

What’s the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Grinding chews the stump below the soil line and is the usual choice. Full removal pulls the root ball and is rarely needed unless you’re building on the spot.

When is the best time to trim trees?

Many trees are pruned while dormant, late fall through winter. Dead or hazardous limbs can come off any time. Some species have timing concerns, so ask about yours.

Which towns do you cover?

Lake and Porter County, including Crown Point, Merrillville, Schererville, Dyer, Munster, Hammond, Hobart, Valparaiso, Portage, Highland, Cedar Lake, St. John, Lowell and Chesterton. Nearby? Call anyway.
